Lemosho–Shira Route – 9 Days

The Lemosho–Shira Route starts on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro.
It closely follows the classic Lemosho route, but on the first day you reach the second camp using the Lemosho approach before the two routes fully join.
This route is well known for beautiful scenery, a quieter start, and very good acclimatization.

Day 1 – Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport
On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by the Relax Africa Tours and Safaris team.
You will be transferred to your hotel in Moshi for an overnight stay.
Pre-climb briefing
In the evening, you meet your mountain guide for a full briefing.
We check your equipment and give practical advice to help you prepare comfortably for the climb.
Day 2 – Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Your climb begins at Londorossi Gate (2,100 m).
After registration, you drive to the trailhead and start walking through lush rainforest to Mti Mkubwa Camp.
Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp
Elevation: 2,100 m → 2,750 m
Day 3 – Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
Today you leave the forest and enter the open moorland zone.
You gradually climb to Shira 1 Camp with wide views across the Shira Plateau and the western slopes of Kilimanjaro.
Overnight: Shira 1 Camp
Elevation: 2,750 m → 3,610 m
Day 4 – Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
You continue across the Shira Plateau to Shira 2 Camp.
The walk is gentle and ideal for acclimatization, while enjoying clear views of the mountain.
Overnight: Shira 2 Camp
Elevation: 3,610 m → 3,850 m
Day 5 – Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
This is an important acclimatization day.
You hike up to Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp.
This “climb high – sleep low” day helps your body adjust to altitude.
Overnight: Barranco Camp
Elevation: 3,850 m → 4,630 m → 3,960 m
Day 6 – Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
You start the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall.
It involves light scrambling and is one of the most enjoyable sections of the route.
After the wall, you continue to Karanga Camp.
Overnight: Karanga Camp
Elevation: 3,960 m → 4,035 m
Day 7 – Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Today you walk steadily up to Barafu Camp, your base camp for the summit attempt.
After arrival, you rest, eat an early dinner and prepare your equipment for the night climb.
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Elevation: 4,035 m → 4,640 m
Day 8 – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
You begin your summit climb shortly after midnight.
After several hours of steady walking, you reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m – the highest point in Africa.
After photos and celebration, you descend to Mweka Camp for a well-earned rest.
Overnight: Mweka Camp
Elevation: 4,640 m → 5,895 m → 3,100 m
Day 9 – Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Departure
You descend through rainforest to Mweka Gate.
At the gate, you receive your summit certificates.
Afterward, Relax Africa Tours and Safaris transfers you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower and celebration.

End of Tour
After the trek, Relax Africa Tours and Safaris will transfer you back to
Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight or assist with your next travel arrangements.
